Where the letter Y comes from
Y comes from the Greek upsilon (ฮฅ), itself descended from the Phoenician waw, the same source as F, U, V and W. The Romans already had V from an earlier borrowing of upsilon. In the 1st century BC they borrowed the Greek letter again as Y, for writing Greek words like "lyra" and "zephyrus", and added it near the end of the alphabet. That's why French still calls it i grec, the "Greek i".
How Y behaves in different styles
Y has no Letterlike exceptions, so every script, gothic and double-struck Y matches its neighbours.
Lowercase y has a long descender, and in script ๐ and bold script ๐ the tail can curl well below the line. That's great for signatures and display names, but in multi-line bios it can touch the text below. Gothic ๐ is also one of the harder capitals to recognise, because its blackletter strokes look little like a modern Y. Keep it for short, decorative words.
Small caps ส (U+028F) is from the IPA Extensions block, where it's a phonetic symbol, and it displays well on modern devices.

FAQs about the letter Y in different fonts
Why is Y called 'Greek i' in French?
