About the letter C in fancy fonts

Where the letter C comes from
C has an unusual history. It comes from the Phoenician gimel and the Greek gamma, which stood for a hard "g" sound. The Etruscans, who passed the alphabet to the Romans, had no separate g sound and used the letter for "k". Early Latin used C for both sounds, and around the 3rd century BC the Romans added a small stroke to C to create a new letter for the g sound: G. So C is the parent of G.
How C behaves in different styles
Two of C's fancy forms aren't in the same Unicode block as their siblings:
- Double-struck โ (U+2102) has been used in mathematics for decades to mean the complex numbers, so it was encoded early in the Letterlike Symbols block.
- Gothic โญ (Black-Letter Capital C, U+212D) was also encoded early.
Both display well on modern phones, but they come from a different part of the font than the letters around them, so in a long gothic word โญ can look a touch lighter. Bold fraktur ๐ฎ has no such exception and matches its neighbours exactly.
Watch out for โธ versus ยฉ. Circled Latin Capital Letter C (โธ) is a letter; ยฉ is the copyright sign. They look alike, but only ยฉ means copyright.

FAQs about the letter C in different fonts
Is โ the same as a double-struck C from the math block?
Yes, it's the only one. Unicode deliberately left a gap at the math-block position (U+1D53A) and points to โ (U+2102) instead, so there's only one double-struck capital C.
Can I use โธ as a copyright symbol?
It's better not to. โธ is the circled letter C. The copyright sign ยฉ (U+00A9) is a separate character, and screen readers and search engines understand only ยฉ as copyright.
Why do people say C and G are related?
G was created from C. Early Latin used C for both the k and g sounds, and the Romans added a stroke to C to make a distinct G.
