About the letter P in fancy fonts
P is a stem with a bowl at the top, and fancy styles have fun with that bowl. Script ๐ซ loops it, gothic ๐ sharpens it, and double-struck โ draws the stem twice.

Where the letter P comes from
P comes from the Phoenician pe, meaning "mouth", drawn as a hook. The Greeks turned it into pi (ฮ ), with two legs. Early Latin borrowed a form from a western Greek alphabet in which the hook closed into a loop, which gives us P. That same loop created a clash with Greek rho (ฮก, the "r" sound), which the Romans solved by adding a leg to make R.
How P behaves in different styles
Double-struck P is the exception. โ (Double-Struck Capital P, U+2119) is the usual maths symbol for the prime numbers, so it was encoded early, in the Letterlike Symbols block. It usually matches well, but it can look slightly different from the other double-struck letters.
Two P lookalikes to avoid in names:
- โ (Script Capital P, U+2118) is the Weierstrass elliptic function symbol. Despite its name, it looks more like a lowercase p and isn't part of the script alphabet.
- ๐ ฟ (Negative Squared Latin Capital Letter P) shows as the blue ๐ ฟ๏ธ parking emoji on most phones.

Negative Squared Latin Capital Letter P (U+1F17F) is also the parking emoji ๐ ฟ๏ธ. Most phones show it in emoji colours, especially when it stands alone.
