About the letter A in fancy fonts
A is the letter people reach for first when they test a font generator, and it's a good test. Its two strokes and crossbar change a lot from style to style. In gothic ๐ the crossbar almost disappears into a curl. Double-struck ๐ธ doubles the left stroke. Script ๐ turns the whole letter into one looping gesture.

Where the letter A comes from
A comes from the Phoenician letter aleph, which started as a picture of an ox's head: a V shape with two horns. The Greeks turned it on its side to make alpha, and the Romans kept that upright form, which is the capital A we use today. The lowercase a grew out of fast handwriting in the Middle Ages. Typefaces usually print the "double-storey" a with a hook on top. Most people handwrite the "single-storey" form, which Unicode also encodes separately as ษ (Latin Small Letter Alpha, U+0251).
How A behaves in different styles
A is one of the easiest letters to style. None of its script, gothic or double-struck forms fall back to older Unicode symbols, so every capital A in the table below sits in the same Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block and looks consistent next to its neighbours.
The one thing to watch is lowercase a in cursive. Script ๐ถ and bold script ๐ช look quite different from each other: many phone fonts draw the regular script version thin and slanted, while the bold one is rounder and easier to read at small sizes. If a single "a" in a name looks faint, switch to the bold script row.

Where people use a fancy A
- Grades and ratings. A stylized A+ (๐+ or ๐ธ+) is popular in study-gram posts and review captions.
- Initials and monograms. A single double-struck ๐ธ or negative circled ๐ works as a compact logo in a profile name.
- Emoji-style blood type. ๐ ฐ (Negative Squared Latin Capital Letter A) shows as the red "blood type A" emoji ๐ ฐ๏ธ on most phones, so it looks different from the other squared letters. Use Squared ๐ฐ if you want an outline without the emoji colour.
FAQs about the letter A in different fonts
Why does ๐ ฐ look like a red emoji on my phone?
Negative Squared Latin Capital Letter A (U+1F170) is one of the few letters that also has an emoji form, blood type A. Many phones show the red emoji version automatically. Squared A (๐ฐ) or negative circled A (๐ ) never turn into emoji.
What's the difference between a and ษ?
They're different characters. 'a' is the normal letter; 'ษ' is the Latin alpha used in phonetics, which looks like the single-storey handwritten a. Search engines and screen readers treat them differently, so keep plain 'a' in anything people need to search for.
Can I use a fancy A in an Instagram username?
Only in the display name. Instagram @usernames accept plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so ๐ or ๐ธ will be rejected there. The Name field and bio accept them.
