About the letter F in fancy fonts

Where the letter F comes from
F comes from the Phoenician letter waw, a hook or peg. Early Greek had a letter shaped like F, called digamma (ฯ), which stood for a "w" sound. Classical Greek later dropped it. The Etruscans and then the Romans kept the shape and gave it the "f" sound we use today. The same Phoenician waw is also the ancestor of U, V, W and Y.
How F behaves in different styles
Script capital F is one of the exceptions. The character is โฑ (Script Capital F, U+2131), which mathematicians use for the Fourier transform. It sits in the Letterlike Symbols block rather than beside the other script capitals, so some fonts draw it with slightly different proportions. Bold script ๐ doesn't have that issue.
Lowercase f is one of the trickier letters in gothic styles: ๐ฃ and ๐ have a long descender and can look like a long s (ลฟ) to readers who aren't used to blackletter. If people misread it, use double-struck ๐ or bold sans ๐ณ instead.

FAQs about the letter F in different fonts
Why does my script F look different from the other letters?
โฑ (U+2131) is an older mathematical symbol. Unicode kept it instead of adding a new script F, and fonts sometimes style it separately. Try bold script ๐ for a closer match.
Is ฯ a fancy F?
ฯ is the Greek letter digamma, not a Latin F. It looks like F but is a different character, so search engines won't match it to F.
Is there a small-caps f?
Yes: ๊ฐ (Latin Letter Small Capital F, U+A730). It was added to Unicode later than most small capitals, so very old devices may show a box.
