About the letter Q in fancy fonts
Q is an O with a tail, and the tail is where fancy fonts show off. Script ๐ฌ sweeps it into a flourish, gothic ๐ makes it look almost like a different letter, and double-struck โ keeps it neat.
Copy any style below. Q has one of the rarest styled characters in the alphabet, the small-caps ๊ฏ, which comes with a caveat.
Where the letter Q comes from
Q comes from the Phoenician qoph, a "k"-like sound made further back in the throat. Early Greek had it as koppa (ฯ), but classical Greek dropped it except as a numeral. The Romans kept Q, almost always followed by U, and that habit passed into English, where Q without U is still rare outside borrowed words like "Qatar" and "qi".
How Q behaves in different styles
Double-struck Q is a Letterlike Symbols exception: โ (Double-Struck Capital Q, U+211A) is the standard symbol for the rational numbers, so it was encoded early. It works well but can look slightly different from the double-struck letters next to it.
Small-caps Q (๊ฏ) is the newest character in the whole small-caps set. Latin Letter Small Capital Q (U+A7AF) was only added in Unicode 11 in 2018, so many fonts still don't include it and it may show as a box (โก). If you're writing a whole word in small caps, a regular lowercase q is the safe fallback.
Don't use ฯ (Greek Small Letter Archaic Koppa) as a fancy q. It looks similar but is a Greek numeral, and search engines won't treat it as Q.
Unicode characters for Q and q
Each style is a separate Unicode character. Names and code points below come from the Unicode Character Database. Characters marked Letterlike come from the older Letterlike Symbols block, not the main math alphabet. A dash means Unicode has no character for that combination.

Where people use a fancy Q
- Queen and quote accounts. Script ๐ฌ and bold script ๐ are common in "queen" bios and quote pages.
- Q&A and quiz posts. Bold ๐&๐ makes a heading stand out in captions and story stickers.
- Gaming and esports names. Gothic ๐ and negative squared ๐ suit tags that need a dramatic letter.
FAQs about the letter Q in different fonts
Why does small-caps q show as a box?
๊ฏ (U+A7AF) was added in Unicode 11 (2018), much later than other small capitals, and many fonts still lack it. Use a normal q in small-caps text if your readers see a box.
Is ฯ a fancy q?
No. ฯ is the archaic Greek letter koppa, used as a numeral. It resembles q but is a different character and won't be recognised as Q.
Why is โ different from other double-struck letters?
โ (U+211A) is the long-established maths symbol for the rational numbers, encoded in the Letterlike Symbols block before the full double-struck alphabet.
