Where the letter V comes from
V is the parent of several letters. It comes from the Phoenician waw, which also gave rise to F and, through the Greek upsilon, to Y. In Latin, V was both the vowel "u" and the consonant "w"/"v". U was later split off as the rounded form, and W started as two Vs (or Us) written together. V is also the Roman numeral for 5, as in "Super Bowl LV" or "Henry V".
How V behaves in different styles
V has no Letterlike exceptions, so every script, gothic and double-struck V is in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block and matches its neighbours.
The things to watch are lookalikes:
- Gothic ๐ and ๐. In blackletter, V and U are easy to confuse, especially in lowercase (๐ณ vs ๐ฒ).
- Script lowercase ๐ can be mistaken for a "u" or "r" at small sizes.
- Roman numerals. Unicode has a separate Roman Numeral Five (โ ค, U+2164), which looks like V but is a number, not a letter. Only use the styles on this page for names.
